In the Montessori classroom, we master the sounds of letters (not just their names) to enable independent reading.
Download the e-book
Our children have written an e-book on their phonics, featuring different objects found at home. This e-book can be viewed on a device (phone, tablet, desktop, or laptop) or in print.
How to use the e-book
Ages are estimates. Ability to read matters more than age. Follow the child and respect their pace when learning.
For Toddlers and Early Readers (18 months – 3.5 years): Sit with your child and show them the objects in the e-book. Then, read the word emphasizing the initial sound and have them repeat the word. Follow this protocol for every picture in the book. Afterwards, play “I Spy” to reinforce their learning by spying an object that begins a specific letter sound.
Emerging Readers (4 years): If your child know all their phonics, challenge your child to sound out each letter in the word.
For Advanced Readers (5 – 6 years): Ask your child to independently read the e-book and then read it to a friend virtually. Ask them to write a story about an object they see in the book.
