Music is a key component of the Montessori classroom, helping children appreciate world cultures and history. Music has distinct sounds and instruments that distinguish its geographic origins. Our students recently got to listen to a Bagpiper, an instrument common in parts of Ireland and the United Kingdom.
They learned that Bagpipes are a class of musical instrument that uses enclosed reeds and a compartment of air (in the form of a bag) to create sound. Students also learned that the musician keeps the bag inflated by blowing air into it through a blowpipe.
They were shown the difference of the great highland bagpipe (which is played mainly outdoors) and the smaller bagpipes (mainly played indoors). Jason the Bagpipe Player played Amazing Grace, patriotic songs and familiar Christmas melodies for the children to sing along.
