Music is a key component of the Montessori classroom, helping children appreciate world cultures and history. Ā Music has distinct sounds and instruments that distinguish its geographic origins. Ā Our students recently got to listen to a Bagpiper, an instrument common in parts of Ireland and the United Kingdom.
They learned that Bagpipes are a class of musical instrument that uses enclosed reeds andĀ a compartment of air (in the form of a bag) to create sound. Ā Students also learned that the musician keeps the bag inflated by blowing air into it through a blowpipe.
They were shown the difference of the great highland bagpipe (which is played mainly outdoors) and the smaller bagpipes (mainly played indoors). Ā Jason the Bagpipe PlayerĀ played Amazing Grace, patriotic songs and familiar ChristmasĀ melodies for the children to sing along.
